Frequently Asked Questions
What does the "F" mean?
The ‘F’ in the Savannah cat generations stands for filial, and the number that goes next shows how many generations removed from the Serval the Savannah is. For example, an F3 Savannah Cat will be 3 generations removed from the Serval, and so on.
Can Savannah Cats be trained like a dog?
While the Savannah Cat is not quite as versatile as a dog, they have been known to train very well to respond to simple commands and even walk on a leash with a harness!
Do Savannah Cats have litter box issues?
Savannah Kittens are taught by their mothers to have good litter box habits. Every kitten that leaves Harmony Savannahs for their forever home is litter box trained. There is of course, ALWAYS the chance that an individual cat may have difficulty, but this is usually due to an environmental problem that can usually be resolved in most cases.
Do Savannah Cats need a special Diet?
Savannah Cats can maintain optimum health on a premium commercial cat food. I usually recommend a dry kibble to help with oral health, and canned food as a treat. Of course each cat is different and some can have special nutritional needs, you should definitely consult with your veterinarian if you think you cat or kitten may need extra nutrition for any reason.
Here at Harmony we use Purina. For the adult cats we use Friskies canned food and Purina One chicken and salmon flavored dry food. For the kittens we use Fancy Feast canned and Purina One kitten dry food.
Can I register My Savannah Kitten?
Yes! All Kittens from Harmony Savannahs comes with TICA Registration Papers, You can go online to TICA.org to register your kitten.
Can I allow my Savannah Kitten to roam freely?
Absolutely NOT! Savannah Cats are extremely curious, and will find themselves lost, run over or stolen. Savannahs should never be allowed to go outside at all unless in a supervised enclosure or on a leash.
Can I get Savannah if I have other pets?
Most savannahs will get along fine with cats and dogs when introduced correctly. It really depends on the personality of the other cat or dog. If your dog has a high prey drive and chases squirrels, you probably should not be considering a kitten. You should not expect your savannah to get along with any pets like mice, chinchillas, birds or anything they might mistake for a snack or a toy. Also, keep in consideration that Savannah cats love water, so keep any fishtanks securely topped!
