Savannah Kitten Care

Bringing Your Kitten Home

First things first, lets discuss Quarantine. It is vitally important that you place your kitten in Quarantine away from other animals or pets for at least two weeks when you first bring them home. Your new kitten should be in a small room, such as a bathroom, where they can easily find and access their litter box, and food and water. This is a great time for you to bond with your kitten!

Taking your new Kitten to the Vet

It is very Important to take your kitten to the vet and have them checked over during the first 72 hours covered by your guarantee. Have your vet look them over, and make sure they are in sound health. This also will get your vet familiar with your new kitten, and your kitten familiar with you vet.

Enrichment for your new Kitten.

This is a big subject! Savannah cats are known for having  a lot of energy! Taking your Savannah for a walk with a proper harness and leash, playing fetch, or simply let them chase a feather wand are great ways to play with your kitten.

Savannah cats are also very intelligent so we suggest childproofing your home and paying close attention to anything that may cause your new kitten harm, such as an open cupboard, or a loose shelf. Opening cabinets and even doors can be easy for some Savannahs, so keep your deadbolts locked if you have door handles that can be easily opened!  You should also monitor all your kitten’s toys for pieces that can be bitten or chewed off and throw away old toys that are damaged or ripped. Bells and stuffing are just a couple of things that can cause a nasty intestinal blockage in your kitten. Keep in mind some plants are poisonous and can even be deadly to your kitten, so make sure your plants are safe!

Litter

At Harmony Savannahs we use Pine Pellet Litter. If you transition your kitten to a different litter, do it gradually. Always make sure to keep the boxes clean!

Scratching posts

Please please please! Always have a scratching post available! You can't keep a Savannah cat from scratching, but you can help to redirect your Savannahs attention away from the furniture.
